What The Good Schools Guide says..
Academic standards are high. ‘Senior schools told us that Richard Pate children come out way ahead of other schools, especially in English and maths,’ said one parent. Another, a teacher herself, said, ‘the progress has been a shock even to me.’ But it doesn’t feel pressurised, there aren’t silly amounts of homework and the lessons are anything but dull. Best subject? History, apparently, with staff scorning the regurgitating of facts and dates and instead dressing up as the likes of Henry VIII and standing on their desk. ‘We had a medieval day and I came as a queen,’ said our tour guide, giving us a courtesy and explaining that they ‘made lavender bags and wrote our names in very, very fancy writing’ and...

What The Good Schools Guide says
Head
Since 2006, Robert MacDonald, previously head of lower school at Cheltenham College for seven years. Hails from Canada where he studied for his master’s in education at St Mary’s University, Halifax, then taught for a decade – including five years as deputy head in two Nova Scotia primary schools. In 1999, he moved to Cheltenham with his English wife Karen, with whom he has a daughter living in Belfast. Enjoys travelling and golf.
No ivory tower for this head, whose glass-walled office overlooks the main foyer and where he regularly pops out to talk to the children. Greets the pupils every morning too, even helping some out of their cars. ‘Did your dad do your hair this morning?’ he joked with one. It’s clear they adore him – no more so...

Special Education Needs
We cater for mild dyslexia and literacy difficulties and mild dyscalculia. Dependent on the needs of the individual child, we will assess and arrange a programme of support either before school or some withdrawal and in-class group work during the school day. This support is delivered by our SENCO and/or the class teacher in either small groups, pairs or on a one to one arrangement. In addition, a qualified teaching assistant, under the guidance of the class teacher and/or SENCO, often supports the individual. Teachers receive training on how to resource for children with learning difficulties and how to adapt their teaching within the classroom.
