We have met with Ivy Education’s staff. In addition, 20 clients and 20 tutors have completed an on-line survey (sent to 450 clients and 647 tutors) and we have followed this up with additional short phone interviews with some of those surveyed.
Founded by Alastair Delafield (40s). Educated at St Edward's School, Oxford and Bristol University, where he read environmental geoscience before doing a PGCE at Bath. Taught science at Dulwich Prep London and Thomas's Clapham, after turning down the offer of head of science at Thomas’s Kensington 'because I liked teaching years 7 and 8 and I wouldn't have got to do so much of it'. Decided to do his own thing instead and set up Ivy Education in 2010, eventually giving up tutoring about five years later. The UK was lucky to keep him, it turns out – that as an ardent kite-surfer in his spare time, he nearly didn't come back from a teaching job in Melbourne.

Review snapshot: A highly branded, tech-savvy, energetic tutor agency run by bright young things who have come in and shaken up industry norms. A company with a clear edge and one we would particularly recommend for home schooling.
Review snapshot: Worried your chosen subject is too obscure? We doubt they’ll be fazed. ‘We have recently found tutors to teach chess, cycling and embroidery,’ says Matt. ‘They are the best agency I have worked with,’ we heard from several tutors. ‘They are very human, very accessible and very nice to work with – they… Areas covered: For hourly tuition and home schooling, they cover all boroughs of London (although heartlands are North London and Chelsea), as well as Oxford and the home counties. Residential placements are available throughout the UK and worldwide.
Review snapshot: "Founded in 2006 by Kate Shand who is committed, passionate, energetic and hugely likeable. Clearly on a mission to deliver a top quality service to her clients – and her tutors – Kate is eloquent on the personal nature of the tutor-client-agency relationship and has a positively moral take on what she sees as her job."
Review snapshot: Getting your child better grades is the raison d’être of this company, which they do through their bank of qualified teachers. So, while other tutor agencies might offer you a med student who teaches science on the side to make a bit of extra money, Capital employs actual teachers with classroom experience to… Areas covered: Around half the tutoring happens online – these pupils mainly live in the South East, with others living all over the UK and beyond into Africa, Singapore and Dubai. The other half is in-person tutoring at the pupil’s home – mainly in London…
Founded in 2014, this company cringes at the term ‘agency,’ preferring ‘network’ instead.
